Bud & Alcohol: Friends or Foes?

Bud & Alcohol: Friends or Foes?

We’ve all heard a story or two about a guy who took a pretty nasty ride after a few too many beers and a toke or two on the J, so what’s really behind the story, and how do we avoid creating one of our own?

To start with, let's talk about the big boozy, leafy elephant in the room: are green and alcohol just, straight up, an awful mix?

While it's not advised to drink many units of alcohol at the same time as smoking joints, many people can and do enjoy a light smoke with one or two alchohol-based drinks. But, there's a good reason you won't find many coffeeshops around that offer both booze and bud, and that's the dark and dreary outcome that most who mix the two will likely encounter at some point in their lives.

This outcome, most commonly known as a 'green out', or 'the spins', is a pretty exhausting and nauseating reaction a person has when combining the two substances, and although not a guaranteed result every time you mix the two, for some people, the reaction can be that nasty that it's worth avoiding the cocktail altogether.

So, what actually happens when you mix the two?

If you've not combined the two before, it might be interesting to hear that the order of consumption will dictate what happens to you. If you have combined the two before, you'll likely find this news a little less profound.

That's right - whether you have a smoke then a drink, or a drink then a smoke, you'll probably have quite a vastly different experience than you would the other, so let's take a look at the two.

Smoking before drinking

When you smoke a joint or two before having a few drinks, the effects of the canna-product can reduce the noticeable effects of the alcohol you consume, leaving you potentially feel way less drunk than you actually are. Although this can create a more relaxed feeling than consuming the two the other way around, it can increase your risk of becoming over-intoxicated, and could potentially cloud your judgement when it comes to making responsible decisions.

Drinking before smoking

When you smoke after drinking, this is where you'll face the highest risk of taking a nasty hit. For the more experienced smokers, a glass or two of wine followed by a few smokes of a joint will likely leave you feeling contented, but for the less experienced smoker, and really anyone who's had a few too many to drink, smoking bud can take you down a pretty wobbly road.

When you drink before smoking, the alcohol that's already in your bloodstream can intensify the effects of THC, and while for some this might not be a problem, for others - with a strong strain - a toke or two can leave you feeling worse for wear.

So, mixing: good idea or no-go?

While we're not here to advise what you do, we'd never recommend anything that can increase a risk to your personal health. If you're ever in the position to have both substances in your system at once, take things slow and be sure to know exactly what you're ingesting before doing so.

If you're in Amsterdam and visiting Prix D'Ami, our team are always happy to give you personalised advice, but you're always welcome to relax in one of our lounges and enjoy a fresh juice, milkshake, or coffee with your smoke instead.

Best Christmas Movies to Watch When You’re Stoned

Amy Wilkinson

Getting high is proven to have a wide range of benefits for many, but above all of those for most of us, it’s just pretty damn enjoyable. We’ve put together a list of our top things to do when you’ve had a smoke, and we’re stoked to share these with you.

What Are Terpenes?

Amy Wilkinson

If there’s one thing distinct to bud other than its high, it’s that sweet skunky smell: eau de Mary-Jane. This can be, for the most part, credited to our dear, aromatic friends, terpenes. These chemical compounds hold an aromatic fragrance in not just bud, but many fruits, flowers, and plants.

Meet The Bong: Your New BFF

Amy Wilkinson

The bong. We all know it, but weirdly, few of us - as big a self-proclaimed stoner as we might be - have ever really embraced its prevalence in the world of smoking. But, worry not. We’re here to break down the stigmas against the bong and fight the bizarrely random cancel culture that society imposed on this traditionally quirky inhalation device.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Amy Wilkinson

Cannabinoids: what are they? So to cover this, we’ve got to get a little scientific here for a quick minute: cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in bud, and although THC and CBD are the most commonly known cannabinoids, there are actually over 450 compounds and more than 60 cannabinoids found in the plant.

Amy Wilkinson

There’s no arguing that good bud and good food are a match made in one pretty high heaven, although if you’re like the rest of us, you’ve probably had a time or two where you’ve fallen into a bit of a slump after stuffing your face with a week’s worth of potato chips after getting a craving for them.
