Meet The Bong: Your New BFF

Historically one of man’s best friends when it comes to smoking, why are so many smokers scared of the bong?

The bong.

We all know it, but weirdly, few of us - as big a self-proclaimed stoner as we might be - have ever really embraced its prevalence in the world of smoking. But, worry not. We’re here to break down the stigmas against the bong and fight the bizarrely random cancel culture that society imposed on this traditionally quirky inhalation device.

A quick throwback

Like most things related to natural highs, the bong dates way, way back. The first written record of a water pipe being used by man as a smoking tool was in the 16th Century with China’s Ming Dynasty, however - records suggest the first bong-like tool dates back 2400 years ago. (When your parents raise issues with smoking, here’s your comeback)

In the 19th & 20th Centuries, bong adoption scaled up rapidly, and by the 90s bongs were all the hype. In 2003, the US Government ran a multi-million dollar campaign to capsize the bong industry with the messaging that the product was ’drug paraphernalia’, and poof went the popular bong.

Well, not really, but you get the gist. What happened to the 90’s bong?!

Bringing it on back

So, now we’ve got an idea as to why so many of us are a little... bong resistant, let’s learn some honest tidbits about the humbling water pipe.

It can feel easier to inhale. The water in the bong cools the smoke, which can take away the familiar burning feeling you might know from roll-ups and blunts.

The bong gives you a really (like, really) smooth smoke. Thanks to the water in the bong, a lot of toxins and heavier particles get left behind, leaving a lighter transition from bud to body.

*Studies have also suggested that THC can be filtered too, so this is something to note when you’re thinking about the level of high you want to reach.

Bigger hits = bigger highs. What they say is true, you do take a bigger hit with a bong, so we’d recommend taking it slowly if you’re just starting out.

Look, we know the bong isn’t for everyone, but for most the issue might be simply getting started. There are few flaws to note in smoking with a water pipe, and good reason for that.
